Summary
The Rehabilitation Instructor is responsible for teaching handicapped clients higher-level vocational, daily living, and social skills, to encourage independent functioning, and/or providing guidance and in-service training to other instructors. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Typical Functions
Performs a lead role in coordinating predetermined work assignments of co-workers and/or subordinate employees by communicating prioritization of activities and project deadlines, reviewing and monitoring the work performed, interpreting policies, procedures, or precedents, and providing supervisory or management staff with project updates, on a regular and recurring basis, to ensure adherence to project goals and timeframes. Instructs students in skilled trades, business education, and other higher-level vocational subjects and personal skills required to prepare them for home or community living and/or economic self-sufficiency. Utilizes work methods, tools, and teaching techniques modified to accommodate individual student handicaps. Administers assessment tests and interprets results to determine client''s progress, strengths, and needs. Monitors students'' behavior and provides positive reinforcement and corrective procedures, as needed to implement behavior modification program. Develops and revises training programs, based on individual assessment results, to capitalize on client''s strengths and minimize weaknesses. Writes reports such as staffing, progress, and behavioral incident reports, to document services provided and client status, and maintains files. Attends client staffing reviews, with in-house treatment staff from other disciplines, to participate in establishing and monitoring client''s overall treatment and training objectives. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of the subject(s) and/or skill(s) being taught. Knowledge of rehabilitation teaching techniques. Knowledge of learning aids and teaching materials appropriate to the subject area and students'' handicaps. Ability to develop and implement training programs appropriate to the individual''s functioning level and treatment goals. Ability to administer and interpret assessment tests and prepare reports. Ability to implement behavior modification programs. Ability to conduct training sessions and provide functional supervision to other instructors. Ability to interact with others to inform, discuss, and resolve problems.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
The formal education equivalent of a bachelor''s degree in education, special education, psychology, or a related field; plus one year of experience in the area being taught. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
